Union Church in Berea, Kentucky, wanted to save operating costs and reduce the church’s carbon footprint. MACED’s E3 team was called in for consultation. After logging data measuring lighting usage in various areas such as the church kitchen, reception area, and community room, MACED determined that lights in the reception area were used the most and would therefore offer the best opportunity for cost and usage savings.
Based on data logged, MACED projected annual usage of the lights in the church reception area at 3057 hrs a year. After reviewing the church’s utility rates which, at the time, were $2.70 per kW (for demand) and $.0628 per kWh (for usage including taxes & surcharges), MACED was able to calculate what the church would save by upgrading equipment in 20 overhead fluorescent light fixtures.
Given this information, the church decided to act. MACED ordered the necessary electronic ballasts and T-8 fluorescent tubes for the church and delivered them. The church paid $600 for the equipment.
Each existing fixture housed one magnetic ballast and four T-12 130w fluorescent tube bulbs. During the upgrade, each of twenty fixtures was given a new, efficient electronic ballast and four T-8 fluorescent bulbs. In some cases, the brightness of the new bulbs allowed the church to reduce the number of bulbs per fixture from 4 to 2, making the energy savings and financial savings even greater than originally estimated.
Since the retrofit, utility rates have gone up for the church. The new rates are $3.90 per kW and $0.0647 per kWh (including taxes and surcharges). With the new rates, the church’s annual savings should rise to $171.21.
